Challenges

The need to deploy to 75 distribution points, 150 regional sites across 13,000 devices within a two-month timeframe was a challenge. Dilignet was able to automate the migration and allow it to run overnight without intervention, leading to more predictable outcomes with no impact to users.

CenITex provides ICT services to Victorian Government departments and their associated portfolio agencies.

CenITex engaged Dilignet for the migration of System Center Configuration Manager (SCCM) to the 2012 version.

As Microsoft had stopped development for SCCM 2007, the migration was required to enable the client to continue to deliver their service to various government departments.

Client Overview

CenITex is an ICT shared services agency set up by the Victorian Government to centralise ICT support to government departments and agencies.

CenITex was created as a state-owned enterprise on 16 July 2008 to deliver ICT infrastructure, application hosting and desktop services. The Victorian Government Minister responsible for CenITex is the Minister for Finance. CenITex sits within the portfolio of the Department of Treasury and Finance for corporate reporting requirements.

CenITex provides ICT services to 31,500 people across Victorian Government departments including: Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR), Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF), Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC), etc.

Project Summary

CenITex manages their desktop and server systems leveraging SCCM and required an updated version of SCCM that would allow them to support newer desktop and server operating systems across various government departments.

Implementing the new version of SCCM was a crucial step in CenITex’s lifecycle management and by doing so ensures that CenITex helps their customers remain current with the latest operating systems, security and applications that services Government in Victoria.

There was also a driver to evaluate Windows 10 for Government users, and this required the latest version of SCCM in order to fulfil this requirement. CenITex went out to market to source a reputable partner to help them upgrade their existing SCCM infrastructure to this latest version. Due to the scale of the project and the size of the CenITex environment, CenITex were looking to partner with an organisation that represents experience with this type of upgrade across other similar sized organisations. One of the major requirements was to ensure no impact on the business, so the solution required governance and controls on the upgrade process itself.

Dilignet, who has upgraded a number of large organisations across Australia, had built intellectual property (IP) to automate the entire upgrade process end to end, ensuring no downtime or impact to the environment during the upgrade process. Dilignet used this IP and tweaked it to adhere to CenITex’s unique requirements. As the original SCCM 2007 architecture was built by Dilignet, Dilignet had strong knowledge of these unique characteristics to ensure a smooth and non-impacting process.

Dilignet first conducted an assessment on their existing system before planning and scheduling. A pilot deployment was rolled out to validate the automation procedures that then led into the actual deployment to eliminate variables and ensure success.

As part of providing this automation IP, CenITex were able to control the upgrade process aligned to their change management procedures and upgrade their entire environment with no impact to the desktops, servers or network infrastructures within the CenITex environment.
